“Saudade”
Painting by artist Jordana de Matos
A note from the artist: “The painting is called "saudade." It is a Brazilian word that has no literal translation in many languages. Saudade is a feeling caused by the distance or absence of something or someone, with the meaning of loneliness.
In the English language there is the expression "feeling blue" which means to be sad. The light colors I chose punctuate this facet of "Saudade" that has no strong colors, but is deep as blue itself.
The absence of contrast between the characters almost integrated in the background, refer to the "presence of the absent", as well as details that show the emptiness caused by this feeling.Only the hands are painted with warm colors and closer to reality, and talk about the indelible mark of what "Saudades" leaves.
In the present moment, when our life depends on social distance, this feeling more than ever looks us in the eye.”
